Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, has been elected as the new national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This development was announced during the party’s national executive committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.

The NEC meeting, which brought together party leaders, aimed to chart a new course for the party ahead of the 2027 general election. Yilwatda’s emergence was adopted as a consensus decision, a move described as both pragmatic and symbolic.

Yilwatda takes over from Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, who resigned from the position on June 27, 2025. His appointment marks a new chapter in the party’s leadership.

The nomination of Yilwatda was made by Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, who is also the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF). The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, seconded the nomination.

As a former governorship candidate in Plateau State and a respected academic, Yilwatda is known for his loyalty to the party and his measured temperament. He is also widely regarded for his policy depth and expertise.

Yilwatda’s appointment is expected to bring a new dynamic to the party’s leadership. His style is anticipated to usher in a quieter but more strategic phase in the party’s leadership.

The party is gearing up for electoral contests and internal reforms, and Yilwatda’s leadership is expected to play a key role in this process. His experience and policy expertise are likely to shape the party’s direction.

With the 2027 general election on the horizon, the APC is looking to Yilwatda to provide strategic leadership and guidance. His emergence as the new national chairman marks a significant development in the party’s journey towards the next electoral cycle.
