In a significant development, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, has been elected as the new national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This announcement was made during the party’s national executive committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, marking a new chapter in the party’s leadership.
Born on August 8, 1968, Professor Yilwatda is a multifaceted personality – a Nigerian politician from Plateau State, an engineer, and a respected academic. His appointment as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in October 2024 speaks volumes about his capabilities and expertise.
Professor Yilwatda’s educational background is quite impressive. He attended Boy’s Secondary School, Gindiri, from 1981 to 1986, and later secured admission into the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi. This strong educational foundation has undoubtedly contributed to his success in various fields.
Yilwatda’s political career is marked by significant roles and responsibilities. He was the coordinator of the Tinubu/Shettima Campaign Organization in Plateau State during the 2023 General Elections. His ability to work closely with key political figures, such as ex-governor Simon Lalong, has been notable in his career.
After Lalong’s emergence as senator, Yilwatda was nominated to replace him as the Minister for Plateau State. Following a successful screening by the National Assembly, he was inaugurated as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs on October 24, 2024. This appointment is a testament to his dedication and hard work.
As a flag bearer for his party in the 2023 gubernatorial elections in Plateau State, Yilwatda challenged the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party at the court. Although the apex court ruled in favor of the PDP, Yilwatda’s acceptance of the judgment showcased his commitment to upholding the rule of law.
Before his ministerial appointment, Yilwatda held several key positions. He served as the resident electoral commissioner in Benue State from July 2017 to December 2021. Additionally, he was the ICT director at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, for 12 years, demonstrating his expertise in both politics and academia.
Yilwatda’s nomination and appointment as the APC National Chairman on July 24, 2025, succeeding Ganduje, mark a new era for the party. With his wealth of experience and knowledge, he is well-equipped to lead the party towards success in future elections.
As the new national chairman of the APC, Yilwatda’s leadership style and policy depth are expected to bring a fresh perspective to the party. His ability to build consensus and work with various stakeholders will be crucial in shaping the party’s direction.
