The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken action against popular singer Hamisu Breaker and TikTok star Abubakar Ibrahim, also known as G. Fresh. They were arraigned before the Federal High Court in Kano on charges related to Naira abuse.
After the charges were read, both Hamisu Breaker and G. Fresh pleaded guilty. This guilty plea led to their sentencing, where they were given a choice between five months in prison or paying a fine of N200,000.
The charges against Hamisu Breaker stemmed from an incident where he sprayed N30,000 in N200 denomination notes at a party in Hadejia, Jigawa State. This action was deemed a violation of the law.
Similarly, G. Fresh was found guilty of spraying bundles of N1,000 notes at a shop opening celebration in the Tarauni area of Kano State. This incident also constituted Naira abuse.
The EFCC’s efforts to combat Naira abuse have been ongoing. Recently, the commission secured the conviction of social media influencer Murja Ibrahim Kunya for spraying Naira notes for fun during her stay in a hotel room.
Kunya was initially arrested in January 2025 for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which prohibits the abuse and mutilation of the Naira. She was granted administrative bail pending her arraignment.
However, Kunya attempted to evade the legal process by absconding. After weeks of investigation and surveillance, EFCC operatives successfully re-arrested her on March 16, 2025.
Upon her re-arrest, Kunya was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Kano on May 20, 2025. She pleaded guilty to the one-count amended charge, leading to her conviction.
The EFCC’s actions against Hamisu Breaker, G. Fresh, and Murja Ibrahim Kunya demonstrate the commission’s commitment to enforcing the law and preventing Naira abuse.
These cases serve as a warning to others who engage in Naira abuse, highlighting the potential consequences of such actions. The EFCC’s efforts aim to promote respect for the national currency and uphold the law.
