The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is gearing up for a strong showing in the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressing confidence that the party will win the election.
Speaking at the unveiling of the Ekiti State chapter of the ADC, Atiku urged current Governor Biodun Oyebanji to start preparing a handover note.
The ADC’s momentum is gaining traction, with members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP), and the All Progressives Congress (APC) defecting to the party. This significant development could shake the political landscape of Ekiti State and impact the electoral fortunes of incumbent Governor Oyebanji in the 2026 gubernatorial election.
Atiku, represented by Prof. Bayo Fakunle, expressed gratitude to the people of Ekiti State for their support during his presidential campaigns. He assured the people that the ADC would rescue them from economic hardship and urged them to support the party’s rescue mission.
Prof. Kolapo Olusola, former Deputy Governor and leader of the PDP bloc that defected to the ADC, stated that the party was formed to challenge those destroying the country through maladministration. He emphasized that the ADC has the caliber of men and women capable of restoring the country to prosperity.
The ADC’s gain is significant, with prominent loyalists and aides of former Governors Ayodele Fayose, Kayode Fayemi, and Segun Oni joining the party. This move could complicate Governor Oyebanji’s electoral prospects in the 2026 gubernatorial election.
Notable figures, including Prof. Kolapo Eleka, Dipo Anisulowo, Modupe Alade, and Gbenga Faseluka, who previously served under Fayose, have officially joined the ADC. This development underscores the party’s growing influence in Ekiti State.
The ADC’s growing strength and high-profile defections from other parties could significantly impact the 2026 gubernatorial election in Ekiti State. As the election approaches, the party’s ability to mobilize support and present a strong candidate will be crucial in determining its chances of success.
The ADC’s emergence as a formidable force in Ekiti State politics could lead to a shift in the state’s political dynamics. As the party continues to gain momentum, its impact on the 2026 election and beyond will be closely watched by political observers and stakeholders.
